Matt Billings Gets Top Five Finishes at Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway Season Openers; Busy Victoria Day Weekend Coming Up

After a couple weeks getting up to speed at Merrittville Speedway, Matt Billings was happy to return to his home tracks for their 2012 season openers this weekend.  He learned a lot at Merrittville, getting valuable experience, but nothing is better then racing closer to home.

First up was the first trip of the season to Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York.  Billings finished second in his qualifying heat, and made some minor adjustments to the car to keep up with the track conditions before the 40 lap feature.  Lining up on the outside of the fourth row in 8^th, Billings was confident that he had a fast car.  He patiently bided his time in the first half of the race, saving his tires for a strong finish.  As the race approached halfway, Billings was coming on strong, now back up to seventh after falling as low as tenth early.  By lap 26 he was in the top five, and continued to be one of the fastest cars on the track as they approached lap 30.  With a caution on lap 36 and Billings now up to third, a great battle was in the works.  He had a great restart, getting past the second place car, and almost took the lead before settling into second, glued to the back bumper of the race leader.  On the final corner of the final lap, Billings was about to make a move, but the race leader suddenly lost power right in front of him, slowing him up.  Billings ended up with a fifth place finish on a night that could have been a win.

“I really thought we had this one.  We had a good restart there, and almost made the pass.  We settled in to second, and was hoping to get a good run on Billy (Dunn) coming off turn four, but it wasn’t meant to be”.

The highly anticipated season opener at Brockville Speedway was Saturday night, and Billings was eager to get back on track in front of his hometown fans.  After an uneventful third place finish in his qualifier, Billings started the 30 lap feature from seventh place, and patiently worked his way forward.  By lap six, he was into the top five and moved up one more spot to fourth before halfway.  Billings would go on to finish the race in fourth.

“It was a good start to the season here at Brockville”, says Billings.  “I am happy with how the car performed this weekend, and I am confident that we can build on this and be even better in the coming weeks”.

It will be a busy Victoria Day Weekend for the Billings Motorsports team as they hit Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway on Friday night and Saturday.  Sunday they will be at Cornwall Speedway for their 2012 opener with 100 lap Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race.  On Monday the team will travel to Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario for another Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified tour event.

Matt Billings Continues Pursuit of Merrittville Success; Ready For Home Track Openers This Coming Weekend at Mohawk Raceway and Brockville

For the second week in a row, Matt Billings and the Billings Motorsports team made the trip to Merrittville Speedway.  While the success isn’t there instantly, the team was more interested in learning, and getting valuable track time at one of the most challenging stops on the DIRTcar 358 Modified tour.

With a front row starting spot in his qualifying heat, Billings was hoping to have a good run in the eight lap race, and set the tone for the rest of the evening.  The car was just too tight, and by the end of the race, he had slid back to sixth.  After making several changes to the car before the 35 lap main event, the team was optimistic that they would be able to improve on their 18^th place finish from the previous week.  Billings rolled of the starting grid from 18^th, and hovered around that spot for most of the race.  At lap 24 he had advanced to 16^th and that is where he finished.

“This is a tough track, and we knew that going into this”, explains Billings.  “I am very happy that we came here the last two weeks, as we think that it will put us in a much better position when we come back here in a couple weeks for the series race.  I am looking forward to coming back and see where we stack up against the rest of the tour guys”.

After driving all night and getting back to Brockville in the early hours of Sunday morning, Billings was eager to get back into the car and run some laps at his home track, Brockville Speedway in preparation for their season opening night this coming weekend.

Mohawk Raceway also opens this coming weekend, and Billings will be a mainstay at that track as well through the 2012 season, in addition to Brockville on Saturday nights.  He will also follow the Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified tour that begins at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 20th and Merrittville Speedway on Monday, May 21^st.

Matt Billings Gains Valuable Experience at Merrittville Speedway on Saturday Night

Many drivers have often said that Merrittville Speedway is one of the toughest tracks on the DIRTcar tour to figure out, and Matt Billings is one of those drivers.  The tricky turn three and four have left the best of drivers scratching their heads as the try and navigate their way around the Thorold, Ontario track.

That is precisely why Billings decided to travel the nearly five hour haul from their Brockville, Ontario home on Saturday night.  They are determined to get a better handle on the Merrittville track before the Mr. DIRTcar Series race on Monday, May 21st.

“We didn’t run very well here last year at all, so hopefully we can learn from that and have a better night”, says Billings before the race at Merrittville, referring to the few trips they made to Merrittville last season.  “We made some improvements to our program for this season, and I am looking forward to getting on the track here shortly”.

Billings began the night at Merrittville with time trials, and he was seventh fastest in his group.  He would start his eight lap qualifier from that position.  On the first lap of the heat, he got caught up in an incident and with minor damage and had to restart from the rear of the field.  Billings battled back to claim a qualifying spot in the main event with a sixth place finish.

The team made several adjustments to the car before the feature, looking to get the car handling better through the corners.  He started to 50 lap main event from the 15th starting position.  Over the first few laps, he had slid back to 20th.  At the checkered flag, he was credited with an 18th place finish.

“It wasn’t the run that we wanted, but we came here to learn, and we certainly accomplished that”, says Billings after the race.  “This is a tough place, and a tough field of cars, so we will keep at it, and learn from tonight and be better next time we are here”.

Billing won’t have to wait long to make a return trip to Merrittville Speedway.  He will be back this coming Saturday night.  With Brockville and Mohawk Raceway not opening for another week, the team will take the opportunity to work on getting their car faster in time for the DIRTcar series race next month.

Billings had the fastest speed of the day in the Modified division posting a speed of 114 miles per hour down the front straightaway during the practice session.

Billings will be back to Can Am this coming Saturday night for the first race of the season, and their confidence is high going into a brand new year. Billings will race at Can Am this week, before running at Merrittville Speedway for the next two Saturday nights. He will race at Mohawk Raceway and Brockville Speedway weekly once they open up on May 11th and 12th respectively.

“We are very happy with how our test session went at Can Am. The weather held off and we were able to get quite a few laps in just to make sure everything was working the way it should”, says Billings. I am ready to get the season started”.

Billings last appearance at Can Am in a 358 Modified was late in the 2011 season and we was able to win the feature. He will be looking to do the same when he returns for the first race of 2012.

“Can Am has always been one of my favorite tracks to race at. We have had a lot of success here in the past in both the Modified and Sportsman”, says Billings. “Hopefully we can get the season off to a good start, and set the tone for the rest of the year”.

Billings also attended the first annual Brockville Ontario Speedway Fan Fair this past weekend at the Home Hardware location in Brockville, Ontario on Saturday. They had their car on display for BOS season preview event, Matt signed some autographs and visited with area race fans that stopped by. The event was a fundraiser for the local Big Brothers and Big Sisters clubs.

Matt Billings Gears up for 2012 Racing Season; A Glimpse Back to 2011 This Weekend With Brockville Speedway Awards Banquet

With the 2012 racing season less then two weeks away, Matt Billings and his Matt Billings Motorsports team are very eager to get the season underway. After a solid 2011 season with three feature wins, and a third place finish overall at their home track Brockville Ontario Speedway, Billings is confident that their hard work over the winter will pay off as head into the 2012 season.

Before the season begins, Billings has some unfinished business to attend to from 2011 as the Brockville Ontario Speedway honors their top finishers from the past year at the annual awards banquet this coming Saturday night.

The following Saturday, April 14th, Billings and the rest of the top five Modified and Sportsman drivers from 2011 will attend the first annual Brockville Speedway Fan Fair from 10am to 2pm at Home Hardware in Brockville. This 2012 season preview event will unofficially kick off the new season for the Matt Billings Motorsports team.

“We are looking forward to the Fan Fair, and getting out and meeting with the Brockville Speedway fans, and other people that may have never been to our local track”, says Billings. “It will be nice to see everyone, sign some autographs and talk racing”.

Billings will hit the track the following for a test and tune session at Can Am and shake down their 2012 ride before the season gets underway the following week. Their schedule for the month of April still remains unclear at this time, but come May, they will be a regular at the Brockville Ontario Speedway once again, looking to better their results from 2011.

“We had a good year last year, but we finished third, so we have a some room for improvement”, says Billings. “Our goal this year is to go out and win the Brockville Speedway track championship. It is going to be a real tough field this year, but we really feel that we have solidified our program over the off-season, and I am ready to get going”.
